  1. Analyse the opportunities and challenges associated with the tourism and hospitality sector within local, regional and global contexts;
  2. Develop pedagogical initiatives that take into account the features of the prevailing curriculum in the school sector and best practices in the tourism sector;
  3. Explain the value of environmental and heritage conservation with reference to empirical examples and different regulatory standards; and,

Second Major - Geography

This Second Major aims at developing students with the knowledge and understanding of:

  • how natural environment influences human activities and vice versa;
  • the changing development of geographical phenomena and issues in terms of space and time;
  • the characteristics and functioning of major natural environments, through the analysis of the transformations of and interactions within them;
  • the characteristics and development of major human activities in different geographical regions, and
  • the geographical issues arising from people-environment interactions and the human responses to such issues, as well as the implications of these human responses for resource management and governance.

Business Career Development (BCD)

INTRODUCTION

This minor is designed to provide students with a basic understanding of the critical issues in business career development, thus enhancing their preparedness for career options in both business and/or non-business sectors. It introduces the essential business and management concepts and examines the evolving local business environment from political, social, legal and economic perspectives. It also discusses critically the organizational, managerial and cultural challenges as well as legal and ethical concerns in the business settings.

After completing the Business Career Development minor, students should be able to:

  • Master the fundamental concepts of business communication and culture at workplace;
  • Demonstrate a solid understanding of the evolving business environment in Hong Kong and its impacts on societal and political aspects; 
  • Appreciate the importance of entrepreneurship in business development and innovations;
  • Analyze and evaluate critically the managerial and organizational challenges in the contemporary business world; and
  • Develop a set of personal values and guiding principles based on strong business work ethics and moral conduct.

Chinese History is an important subject in Hong Kong secondary schools particularly in junior forms. This minor provides students with a basic understanding of the design and characteristics of the Chinese History curriculum in Hong Kong, and also equips them with the teaching skills of this subject. It introduces the continuity and changes of the history of China and Hong Kong with a focus on the inter-relationship among the geographic, economic, social, political and diplomatic developments from the pre-historic period to the present by adopting interdisciplinary approach. This minor also emphasizes the main features and achievements of the Chinese culture.

Aims

This Minor is a complementary programme designed to study media and communications of contemporary society. It provides a theoretical foundation for students to understand not only the role of media in the political arena, social activities and economic development, but also the influences and impact of media in the local, regional as well as global context. This Minor also intends to cultivate students’ communication skills and strategies in different aspects of life.

 

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Minor, students will be able to:

(a) explain the policy, regulatory, legal and economic aspects of media and communication services;

(b) articulate the relationship between effective communication and policy-making;

(c) appraise the communication aspect of governance and civic engagement at the local, regional and global levels;

(d) apply communication skills and strategies in different aspects of lives; and

(e) demonstrate their ability to integrate communications skill on work-life upon graduation.

Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation

INTRODUCTION

The Minor in Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation focuses on most recent innovation and technology in business as well as the latest development of information technology. It is designed for students of different disciplinary and learning backgrounds, so that they can critically select new technologies. Students are also trained with necessary competencies in knowledge and skills to set up and run their own business. Creativity and business innovation are emphasized in this minor in order to develop attributes of entrepreneurship. Developing entrepreneurship among students does not simply aim at teaching them to start or run a new business. It focuses on developing positive values and attitudes, generic skills and knowledge which enable students to stay positive in uncertainties, as well as identify and realize the opportunities.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this Minor, students should be able to 
(a)    demonstrate a solid understanding and command of the core concepts of entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation in a multi-cultural perspectives;
(b)    recognize knowledge and skills on the latest development on innovation and technology of business in local, regional and global context;
(c)    apply creative and critical thinking to solve business problems with ethical consideration; and 
(d)    exhibit the knowledge and practical skills in running a small business especially related to a start-up business.

INTRODUCTION

The minor in Global Governance Studies consists of five social science courses with a focus on political science as applied to global urban and environmental studies. The minor will enable students first to come to a critical understanding of the political, economic, social, and cultural dimensions of globalization.
